Indonesia's Yogyakarta Region Hosts ACT Alliance General Assembly

What Are Its Features?

The Middle East Council of Churches - Indonesia

The eyes of the world are turning to the continent of Asia, specifically to the Yogyakarta region in Indonesia, which is hosting the activities of the General Assembly of the international organization "ACT Alliance." At the invitation and hosting of the Indonesian "YAKKUM" Center, the event is held under the title "Hope in Action, Together For Justice," from October 28 to November 1, 2024.

But what is special about Yogyakarta? And what are its peculiarities? These are questions that must be answered due to the diversity of this region and the richness of its history and civilization.

Asian Location

First, Yogyakarta is located in southwestern Indonesia, south of Central Java, and overlooks the Indian Ocean. It includes Mount Merapi, one of Indonesia's most active volcanoes, situated on the border with Central Java.

Yogyakarta's climate is tropical monsoon, with heavy rainfall especially between November and April, but temperatures remain relatively constant.

A Diverse Cultural Tapestry

Indonesia is characterized by its religious diversity and is a Muslim-majority country, with an estimated 87% of its population being Muslim. But it is also home to many communities of Christians, who make up about 7% of its population, as well as Hindus, Buddhists, and followers of traditional indigenous beliefs.

The majority of its inhabitants are indigenous and live in harmony with some of the minorities that have been assimilated into Javanese culture. Yogyakarta also has a large number of students studying at its universities, including students from other regions and provinces of Indonesia.

Historical Highlights

Historically, Yogyakarta was the capital of the Mataram Sultanate. It also came under Dutch occupation and supported the Indonesian revolution against it, serving as the capital of Indonesia between 1946 and 1948 after the occupation of Jakarta. In this context, the government granted it a special status, allowing it to maintain the order of the sultanate.

Unfortunately, from time to time, this area is exposed to earthquakes, such as the one that struck on May 27, 2006, which resulted in more than 5,000 deaths and hundreds of injuries, in addition to heavy damage to buildings and infrastructure.

Arts & Culture

Yogyakarta is known for embracing traditional Javanese culture and arts, as well as music, poetry, and expressive and performing theater. It includes diverse archaeological and historical sites such as the Prambanan Hindu Temple and the Borobudur Buddhist Temple, making it a global tourist destination.

The Indonesian region of Yogyakarta is an oasis of science and culture and a meeting place for diverse religions and traditions. Participants in the ACT Alliance General Assembly will be able to learn about its characteristics and delve into its historical civilization.
