Indonesian YAKKUM Center Hosts ACT Alliance General Assembly
Together for Inclusive Communities!
The Middle East Council of Churches - Indonesia
Working for inclusive justice for all is one of the most important goals of the international organization “ACT Alliance”, which is holding its General Assembly hosted by the YAKKUM Rehabilitation Center for People with Disabilities in the Yogyakarta region, Indonesia, from October 28 to November 1, 2024, under the title "Hope in Action, Together for Justice."
This justice has been sought by Pusat Rehabilitasi YAKKUM for many years by safeguarding the rights of persons with disabilities in inclusive societies by providing essential services for these tasks.
In fact, the center was established on November 16, 1982, as the Bethesda Rehabilitation Project at the initiative of Colin McLennan of New Zealand. The project was created to help people with physical disabilities in Indonesia, with financial support from the Presbyterian and Methodist Church Guild in New Zealand.
This center aims to work with local communities in order to raise awareness about the rights of persons with disabilities. It also contributes to providing comprehensive support to individuals at work. It seeks to become an independent and sustainable organization so that it can continue to support people with disabilities throughout Indonesia.
In addition, the center provides rehabilitation support to disaster victims and empowers people with psychosocial disabilities by promoting community mental health.
The issue of community inclusion has become critical, as YAKKUM, the Middle East Council of Churches (MECC), and many regional and international organizations seek to work towards building and empowering healthy societies in order to ensure an interactive space that includes all people without any discrimination.
