What Are the Meanings Behind the Middle East Council of Churches’ Logo?
Behind the Middle East Council of Churches logo lies an Ecumenical Humanitarian and Historical organization seeking, since its foundation in 1974, to work for Christian unity, the testimony of the Bible and serving humanity in different fields. But do you know the exact meanings that this oval logo symbolizes and what its connotations are?
This symbol is composed of three major elements: the cross, the fish and the oval. In its center, you can find a cross in the monogram form of the two Greek letters Khi and Ro, which are the first two letters of the Greek word for "Christ".
The fish, on the other hand, is one of the oldest known Christian symbols which translates to Greek ΙΧΘΥΣ or Akhsos symbolizing Jesus Christ, Son of God and our Savior:
I – I - lues: Jesus
Χ – Ch – Christos: Christ
Θ – Th – Theou: God’s
Y – U – Uios: Son
Σ – S – Soter: Saviour
The oval form symbolizes Christ's majesty, glory and divinity in the Holy Icons. Noting that this form surrounds Jesus Christ in the icons of His Transfiguration, Resurrection and Ascension.
