Climate Justice Discussed at Press Conference During the Fourth General Assembly of ACT Alliance in Indonesia

The Middle East Council of Churches Media Participates in It

Recognizing the importance of the media's role in shedding light on urgent humanitarian and social issues, ACT Alliance held a press conference to discuss the most prominent current issues addressed by its Fourth General Assembly, especially the topic of climate justice and the actions needed by civil society and stakeholders to protect the earth from threats that endanger it. The press conference saw the participation of Indonesian and international journalists, as well as media department of the Middle East Council of Churches (MECC).

The General Assembly is being held under the theme "Hope in Action, Together for Justice," from October 28 to November 1, 2024, in the Yogyakarta region, Indonesia.

During the press conference, the following participated: ACT Alliance General Secretary Mr. Rudelmar Bueno de Faria; Secretary General of the World Council of Churches (WCC) Reverend Professor Dr. Jerry Pillay; Moderator of ACT Alliance Governing Board and Director of ACT Church of Sweden Mr. Erick Lysen; National Director of Gusdurian Indonesia Network Ms. Alissa Wahid; Director of Development and Humanitarian Programs at YAKKUM Indonesia Ms. Arshinta; Ms. Brigita Ra Sekar Laras, in charge of the Sustainability, Humanitarian, and Inclusion Program at YAKKUM Emergency Unit; and the General Secretary of the Indonesian Communion of Churches Reverend Jacky Manuputty.

The most prominent topic discussed was climate justice, which requires significant efforts through solidarity and cooperation to achieve it, as stressed by the speakers who sounded the alarm about activities that threaten the environment and put human life at risk.

Climate justice needs serious action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, as legacy systems for material extraction, transportation, distribution, and power generation need to change. Climate justice is also a combination of human rights and climate change, especially as it aims to protect human rights that are negatively affected by climate change. Through it, we can achieve a fair distribution of burdens and costs between poor, developing, and industrialized countries.
