You may find below the text of the speech.
“Ladies and gentlemen,
We gather today to ring the bell and raise our voices to stand and work together towards a better planet.
The environment is facing nowadays a danger issue called climate change which imposes many repercussions on our daily life, and this is what demand our collective attention and action.
In the Middle East, we are acutely aware of the climate change’s effects which we are facing seriously. But in fact this issue is not being well raised in our region because our governments are working on other files that they consider more important on their agendas due to the wave of conflicts and crises that we are witnessing.
Our MENA region is characterized by arid landscapes and water scarcity, faces increasing temperatures, dwindling resources, and more frequent extreme weather events.
Therefore, the repercussions lie not only on the environmental level but also on the economical and social levels, and this is what put the stability of our communities in danger.
In light of this situation, our organizations in the MENA region are standing together sticking to hope for a better world.
The Middle East Council of Churches (MECC), the organization to which I belong, is working since many years ago on the environmental issue, through launching the Season of Creation in the Middle East and organizing its activities, holding ecojustice lectures, implementing afforestation campaigns, organizing environmental awarness sessions especially with the youth, as well as other activities.
In fact, MECC stresses that we are followers of Christ, we share a common call to care for creation. We are co-creatures and part of all that God has made. Our well-being is interwoven with the well-being of the Earth.
Thus, let us pray and work together to protect our common home, and celebrate God as Creator.
Let us remember that our actions today will shape the world of tomorrow. Hence, cooperation, collaboration and communication are needed for a safer world.
Thank you”
