The Service and Relief – Diakonia Department, Beirut’s Office, Offers a Dose of Joy to Elderlies Despite Life's Difficulties

“I will be your God throughout your lifetime -- until your hair is white with age. I made you, and I will care for you. I will carry you along and save you (Isaiah 46:4).

As the Lebanese economy continues its downward trajectory, many citizens are losing their sources of income. As a result, the elderly who still depend on younger generations for livelihood, are finding it increasingly difficult to secure financial resources to pay for all expenses related to food, health, electricity etc…

While many organizations are reporting donor fatigue due to the protracted crisis in the region, the Middle East Council of Churches is still able to assist the elderly, albeit limited resources.

During September- October 2022, the MECC Service and Relief – Diakonia Department, Beirut’s Office, executed its cash distribution mission by handing out cash aid to 804 families in Mount Lebanon and greater Beirut, through Our Lady Dispensary, affiliated to MECC, in the Sabtieh region, and member Churches. Since some of the beneficiaries cannot make it to the dispensary, the MECC team and representatives of member churches conducted visitations to their homes to distribute the cash.

Seeing their faces light up with a smile, during times of immense needs, is enough payment for those working on MECC’s behalf. After all, we all have parents whom we love and adore. Helping these people is similar to taking care of our own folks.
