Towards the 75th anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the Middle East Council of Churches, in partnership with the Regional Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, is honored to invite you to an intellectual seminar entitled "Dignity, Freedom and Justice". It will be held on Wednesday 11 January 2023, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., at the headquarters of the MECC General Secretariat in Hamra, Beirut, Makhoul Street, Deeb Building, 3rd floor. A group of concerned specialists in the field of human rights will participate in the seminar. It will begin with welcome speeches from the MECC Secretary General Dr. Michel Abs and the UN Deputy Special Coordinator for Lebanon, Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator for Lebanon, Mr. Imran Riza. The seminar will include many sessions centered on the development of international human rights law, the United Nations’ work for human rights, and Lebanon's obligations.
The seminar is part of the MECC continuous work to spread and defend the human rights’ principles. Noting that the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights launched on 11 December 2022, a year-long campaign under the theme “Dignity, Freedom, and Justice for All”, calling on to “Stand up for Human Rights and Defend it”. It is launched for the celebration of the 75th anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
The campaign will raise international awareness about this Declaration, its legacy and importance, and the work of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights in this context. The campaign also aims to promote the international culture of human rights, so everyone, especially youth, will be able to defend human rights. It is worth mentioning that the seminar will end with a discussion on the future plans and how MECC and its partners can participate in this international campaign. The seminar will also issue recommendations.
