Trauma Healing and Spiritual Counseling
Psychological and Spiritual Support Sessions in the Heart of the Lebanese Nature
The MECC Theological and Ecumenical Department implemented a new training as part of the “Trauma Healing and Spiritual Counseling” program for a group of youth at the Convent of the Congregation of Maronite Sisters of the Holy Family in Akoura, Lebanon, from Thursday 16 to Sunday 19 September 2021. The training was organized by the program coordinator Sister Emilie Tannous in cooperation with the coordinator of the department's programs Jean-Pierre Eid.
The program was executed as a follow-up to the psychological and spiritual repercussions of the Beirut Port blast, which have negatively affected the lives of the Lebanese people. This program included various sessions with specialists from different fields, dialogue sessions to share experiences and expertise, as well as Ecumenical Prayers from different Ecclesiastical families. The sessions were distinguished by the team work and case studies.
The first day included introductory sessions between the participants. The second day started with a morning workout with coach Charbel Chalhoub aiming at reconciling with the body, relieving stress and overcoming difficulties. The workout was followed by a session with Father Jean Daoud about ways to face trauma and heal wounds. Father Daoud based his explanations on the Christian faith so the participants can understand the silence of God and enter the path of forgiveness that constitutes a door to healing, with Jesus Christ, the Resurrection and Life.
In an another session, Dr. Fadi Abou Mrad presented ways to deal with stress, depression and burnout with a psychiatric view, in order to build a better mental health that contributes in helping and supporting others.
The third day was dedicated for an environmental trip in the nature of Akoura, with the specialist, paramedic and environmental activist Michel Mansour. The trip included several religious and environmental activities, especially a visit to the cave of Adonis and Astarte. As well as, a group training sessions with the psychotherapist Dr. Eliane Fahed, aiming at releasing anger and searching for self and peace.
On the last day, participants went climbing in Laklouk village, enjoyed the Lebanese environment and reconciled with nature and self. The youth also participated in practical exercises based on the acquired information and teachings, and then gathered for lunch in Ehmej Cedars. At the end of the program, they all retuned to Beirut.
