Distribution of Laying Hens to 200 Poor Families in Dara’a
Within the Livestock and Poultry Program, MECC team continues to support poor and affected families to help them overcome difficult living conditions and empower them to participate in the economic life.
The MECC Team distributed 30 laying hens to 111 families in Al-Sanamayn and 89 families in Ghabagheb in rural Dara’a, providing coops, fodder mixture kits, vaccines, vitamins, and veterinary services to vulnerable households.
Benefiting families received guidance and instructions on how to raise laying hens, what their needs are in terms of nutrients and correct methods of preparing fodder mixture. The program also raised awareness about possible illnesses and prevention methods.
The project aims to revive the concept of raising laying hens at home, since it disappeared during the war, and help the families living in rural areas improve their financial situation by securing a daily income from selling fresh eggs.
One of the beneficiaries said: “We now eat eggs for breakfast and dinner to save money to buy other food items. We also sell a big portion of eggs as an additional source of income in these difficult times.”
Another woman said: “This project is helping people during hard times. The majority of the population living in the rural areas of Dara’a used to depend on raising hens, but they lost everything during war and displacement. We collect 15 to 20 eggs per day, so we eat some and sell the rest to afford other necessities.”
