A New Storm Coming Up and Many Families Affected by the Beirut Explosion Are Still Homeless. When Will Justice Be Served?

As a storm draws near, to usher in low temperatures and ice of formations, many are still without a home after the Beirut explosion. To make things worse, a protracted economic crisis is causing a rise in poverty, high unemployment and massive inflation, diminishing their ability to find a solution. To make things worse, authorities are still not willing to release any information regarding the details of the explosion. A shroud of political red tape consumes the investigation and the simplest shred of justice is yet to be bestowed upon the victims and all those who have lost their homes and livelihoods. To conduct an impartial investigation, there should be an unbiased government, free from any political affiliations. Yet, political factions in Lebanon have never been ever so divided over the names of the members of the new cabinet of ministers. As such, uncovering the truth might take quite some time.

Nevertheless, the Lebanese army recently announced the launch of the second phase of the distribution of cash assistance to the Lebanese citizens who were physically affected by the devastating explosion.

An amount of 50 billion Lebanese pounds (about 33 million US dollars according to the official exchange rate) was transferred to the treasury of the armed forces, as part of the sums allocated by the Lebanese state to pay compensation for the benefit of the Lebanese. Being considered the least corrupt Lebanese institution, the army was entrusted with this obligation. Yet, success remains to be seen as outcries for help are continuously being presented over media outlets.
