Fear, anxiety, despair, severe poverty, uncertain future... all these expressions describe the circumstances in Lebanon today. Refugees, as Lebanese, are all passing through hard and deteriorating living conditions. In fact, refugees left their countries in search of a better and safer life, but today they are facing many difficulties at various economic, social and health levels...

Since its establishment, the Middle East Council of Churches is keen to help the refugees, taking care of them and preserving their dignity.

In this context, the Service and Relief Department – Diakonia, Beirut office, organized a program for refugee women empowerment and support. Noting that most of these women’s husbands are only able to hold a small selection of low-paying illegal jobs, and therefore are unable to provide their daily needs to protect their families.

The program included training sessions for a group of refugee women aiming at enhancing their capabilities by teaching them the skill of painting on wood and motivating them to develop this skill and use it in a way to earn money.

The sessions helped the participants to get back their normal activity and to feel proud and confident of themselves, especially since they were negatively affected by the daily pressures.

This program was implemented in cooperation with the international organization Norwegian Church Aid – NCA, at Our Lady Dispensary, affiliated to MECC and located in Sabtiyeh – Lebanon.
