Following its restoration, when St. Elias Elderly Center in Aleppo Governorate Will Return Back to Life?

This news is also available in Arabic.

The restoration of St. Elias center for elderly was completed. The Care Home was rehabilitated by MECC in cooperation with Kerk in Actie organization in Netherlands within the rehabilitation program that works on the restoration of social and religious establishments affected by Syrian crisis.

The importance of the rehabilitation stems from the increase in number of people in need for shelter because of protracted Syrian war; many people lost their homes while others lost their loved ones. Moreover, a large number of sons and daughters were forced to travel abroad leaving behind their old parents.

The establishment was founded in 1863. Many charity organizations affiliated to the Syriac Catholic Church used to supervise the establishment which used to take care of hundreds of elderly persons. It used to be called” a house of the forgotten” meaning those who have no one to take care of and are unable to take care of themselves. The name of the establishment was changed to “St. Elias center for Elderly” after its rehabilitation in 2010 by the initiative of the Syriac Catholic Archbishop of Aleppo Mor Dionysius Antoine Shahda.
