Secretary General Gives Condolences Over the Phone to His Holiness Pope Twadros II

The Middle East Council of Churches expresses its sorrow over the loss of its Executive Committee member, His Eminence Anba Bishoy, Metropolitan of Damietta and Kafr El-Sheikh and the Monastery of Saint Demiana, Barrari-Belkas, who passed away on October 3, 2018, aged 76.

نعى مجلس كنائس الشرق الأوسط عضو الهيئة التنفيذية الأنبا بيشوي مطران دمياط وكفر الشيخ ورئيس دير الشهيدة دميانة ببراري الذي توفي اليوم في 3 تشرين الأول 2018 عن عمر يناهز 76 عامًا.

الأمينة العامة للمجلس د. ثريا بشعلاني وفور ورود النبأ إتصلت بقداسة البابا تواضروس الثاني بابا الإسكندرية وبطريرك الكرازة المرقسية معزية، مؤكدة أن المجلس خسر ركنًا من اركانه، وأن الأنبا بيشوي كان علّامة في اللاهوت العقيديّ، ذات فكر مسكوني يؤمن بالتقارب ما بين الكنائس في رسالتها في خدمة الإنسان.

MECC General Secretary: While stressing the importance of relief programs for the refugees, displaced, and migrants, of development programs within the host countries, I insist upon the need for effective measures to help these populations return home, under decent humanitarian and security conditions

The General Secretary of the Middle East Council of Churches (MECC), Dr. Souraya Bechealany met with Mireille Girard, UNHCR representative in Lebanon, in the head office, in Beirut. Possibilities of collaboration were discussed for the sake of human dignity, as efforts should be joined to assist the refugees and displaced, a concern that has become of prime importance around the world today.

Dr. Bechealany: Tout en soulignant l’importance de l’intervention humanitaire et des opérations d’adaptation dans les sociétés hôtes, pour autant est nécessaire la priorité de trouver des solutions de rapatriement de ces réfugiés, selon des conditions humanitaires et sécuritaires dignes de la personne humaine.

C’est au bureau principal à Beyrouth que la Secrétaire Générale du Conseil des Eglises au Moyen-Orient (Cemo), Dr. Souraya Bechealany, rencontra la représentante du HCR au Liban, Mme Mireille Girard, dans le contexte d’une discussion constructive sur les possibilités de collaborer au profit de la dignité humaine, et de joindre tous les efforts afin d’assister les réfugiés et des déplacés, une cause devenue aujourd’hui de première importance dans le monde entier.

Dr Souraya Bechealany, Secretary General of the Middle East Council of Churches (MECC) participated in the conference organized by the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development on September 13-14 in the Pontifical Urban University. The meeting was attended by more than fifty Catholic charitable organizations, representatives of the local episcopates and ecclesial institutions and religious congregations operating in Syria, Iraq, Lebanon, and neighboring countries, as well as some Caritas branches, charity committees, and the apostolic nuncios in Syria, Iraq, Lebanon and Turkey.

Message from the conference “Xenophobia, Racism and Populist Nationalism in the Context of Global Migration”

We profess our faith in the God of Jesus Christ, and we believe that humanity is created and loved by God and that human beings are equal in dignity and are entitled to the same fundamental human rights.

Religious leaders from diverse traditions share candid thoughts on xenophobia

At a global conference on xenophobia in Rome, a panel of four religious leaders from, respectively, Buddhist, Christian, Hindu and Islamic traditions, spoke candidly about how xenophobia can sometimes be woven deeply into the fabric of these traditions. The World Conference on Xenophobia, Racism, and Populist Nationalism in the Context of Global Migration is running 18-20 September.

One Lebanon, a Lebanese NGO promoting social cohesion and unity in the country, produced a video campaign for Annunciation Day — celebrated in Lebanon as the world’s only Islamo-Christian shared holiday — which features participants from all of Lebanon’s 17 Christian and Muslim sects.
